Jamie stops by the studio

Jamie stops by the studio

21st October 2010

Great day with Jamie and his team working on a new project at our studio today, so exciting. We have worked with and met some amazing people since starting Interstate and Jamie was another fantastic character that we will not miss an opportunity to get a photo of for the Interstate family album. From Nicole Sherzinger to Lewis Hamilton, Bernie Ecclestone to the Crown Prince of Bahrain, Dolph Lundgren to Pierluigi Collina, the album makes us smile.

Jamie’s confidence and energy was so lovely to experience and a real inspiration to the team.

2010 D&AD Book Launch

15th October 2010

There are quite a few members of D&AD at Interstate so when the Annual comes out it’d be rude not to go and celebrate. This year, the venue was the Getty Images Gallery where we were surrounded by dramatic prints of days gone by. The Annual itself has been illustrated this year by celebrated fine-artist-signwriter […]

The importance of seeing things differently

The importance of seeing things differently

24th August 2010

It is our job to see things. Firstly we have to see by learning and absorbing what a client represents and offers. Secondly, we must translate this into something tangible for the end-user to see, to understand, to associate with. But, this creative ’seeing’ process has two quite different facets.

Capturing It!

Capturing It!

5th July 2010

On more than one occasion recently I have noticed some quite prominent exposure of the font we used for the Play F.C. branding project. I suspect this is just coincidence and down to the fact that since using it I have become visually aware of its characteristics. Interestingly though, albeit for one example, the context in which it is used is far removed from the motive behind using it for Play F.C.

Buy Your London Borough for £495

Buy Your London Borough for £495

30th June 2010

London artist Stephen Walter has hand-drawn a map of all 32 London boroughs to create a fictitious island of London, simply titled ‘The Island’. Taking a year and a half to create, the map accurately details all of London’s hamlets through geographic locations, descriptions of their surroundings, and tells of events that have happened from years gone by as well as his own experiences in each place. On display at the British Library, the map can be viewed in the current exhibition Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art until 19th September 2010 (and also in great detail on their website).

The Geometry of Pasta

The Geometry of Pasta

4th June 2010

Judging a book by it’s cover I thought it would be a lovely piece of information design about the many different pasta types but I never imagined it to be a fully functioning cookbook.

Get a better taste for the book through it’s promotional website and check out the accompanying animation.
Buon appetito!

*For Charity

Interstate have recently designed the identity for a charity 6-a-side football tournament to take place at West Ham United’s Upton Park this summer. The event, scheduled for Wednesday June 9th (two days before the World Cup gets underway in South Africa) has been arranged by management consultancy Value Partners and aims to raise a substantial amount of money for the One to One Children’s Fund’s fight against HIV and AIDS amongst African children.

Each year WCRS (BMW’s advertising agency) produces a tactical April Fool’s day advert which appears in the broadsheet press on April 1st only.
A company that until recently was quite ‘Joy-less’ has created a tradition of humour in the UK press. A great way to use a different angle to drive awareness and show a different side to your brand personality.

Dish of the Day

Dish of the Day

17th March 2010

For St Patrick’s Day, Nathan Yau (a designer and writer for FlowingData.com) has used information design to illustrate the making of a traditional Irish corned beef and cabbage recipe. It’s quite an interesting approach, there are no images of the finished dish, nor any raw ingredients, so you will need to use your imagination for what the end result will look like (unless you have previously made or tasted it).

Mouse Trap

Mouse Trap

12th March 2010

Really interesting application called ‘IOGraphica’, created by Moscow designer Anatoly Zenkov. It maps the movement of your mouse over a period of time and converts it into linework. It’s really simple to use, just start the application, minimise the window and let it run whilst you carry on with your work. The results form such intricate creations that they become works of art – almost Jackson Pollock-like! The first image post is the result of Monday’s work. The circles depict areas where the pointer was stationary, whilst the lines track movement. Track my ongoing masterpieces for this week…

Information Design Taken to an All New High

18th February 2010

No-frills South African airline ‘Kulula’ has uncovered, and highlighted, some informative and fun observations about one of it’s Boeing 737’s through a clever piece of livery design.
Although I don’t think I’m too concerned looking at where the black box is located, I’m now in the know where to find the all important ’secret agent code’. Having a (fun) study-up of all things plane-related before boarding definitely beats staring into space whilst waiting for your seat row to be called, any day!

For my first ever blog post, I’m taking you back four years to a film called “Stranger Than Fiction”. I’ve always loved the title sequence, and combining an appreciation of information design with a passion for all things OCD-related, it’s a match made in heaven! If you’re anything like me, and you haven’t seen it yet, check it out – you won’t be disappointed…
