Interstate of Mind » Motorsport Ideas from the heart. Creative minds for the driven and uncompromising. Interstate. Mon, 10 Feb 2014 13:07:31 +0000 en-US hourly 1 An all round Smart performance Wed, 03 Apr 2013 11:01:15 +0000 A 1st hand experience of InterGTM's Porsche Carrera Cup Team, Samsung Smart Motorsport's inaugural race at Brands Hatch.

This Easter weekend saw the first race of a new season for the British Touring Car Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. It was also the first race for our client, InterGTM‘s Porsche Carrera Cup team, Samsung Smart Motorsport.

All of the build up and hype boiled down to delivering a blistering performance this weekend. Weeks of testing, excitement, media launches, travel and preparation led to the first race of the season, which was held at legendary British circuit, Brands Hatch.

Our drivers, Michael Meadows and Richard Kent, knew exactly what was was expected of them, and with a strong, experienced team behind them, they went into the weekend confident and focused.

The qualifying round brought Michael into 2nd on the grid for race day 1, with Richard a little further back in 6th. The cold weather didn’t distract the drivers, and they both put in impressive displays which found Michael finishing 2nd and Richard finishing 6th. On race day 2, Michael started from pole position, with Richard again starting from 6th. The second race had more drama than the first, with Michael taking an unfortunate spin off the track. While trying to overtake on the outside of a corner, Michael received a rather controversial nudge from another driver, which sent him wide on the grass, resulting in a spin across the track and hitting a tyre wall backwards. Fortunately, the car was still able to drive, and Michael was able to put in some of the fastest lap times of the weekend, but only able to play catch up and finish 9th. Richard put in a consistant drive and secured a comfortable 5th place finish.

Across the two days of racing, Michael currently sits in 3rd in the driver championship, with Richard just behind in 4th, while Samsung Smart Motorsport sit comfortably in 2nd in the team championship.

From my point of view, visiting Brands Hatch was a fantastic experience! As I’ve been involved in this job since day one, it’s was great to finally see our graphics in a racing environment. Seeing the transporter garage, fully liveried cars, team uniform, all in application was incredibly rewarding.

As this was also my first time at a race weekend, I was unsure what to expect. The Brands Hatch environment was very exciting, despite the cold weather, and the race events were action packed and thrilling!

A great weekend in all, and I look forward to the second race weekend, Donington Park on the 19th-21st of April.

The launch of a dynamic partnership Tue, 12 Mar 2013 10:20:40 +0000 As mentioned on an earlier post, we've been busy working on a new brand for the Samsung Smart Motorsport Porsche Carrera Cup Team.

As mentioned on an earlier post, we’ve been busy working on a new brand for the Samsung Smart Motorsport Porsche Carrera Cup Team. This comprised of a launch night in the Porsche Centre, Mayfair; a glittering night where the new livery was unveiled. But we’d been busy much earlier slowly dressing the cars each time they went out for performance testing at circuits at home and abroad.

Next step is the first race, on Easter weekend at Brands Hatch. Good luck team!

Follow the team at the official Instagram, Flickr, Twitter or Facebook feeds or check out the InterGTM website.

Below is the official press release.

Samsung Electronics UK today announces its partnership with InterGTM to run a hand selected team in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship. The InterGTM team, will enter as ‘Samsung Smart Motorsport’ and the partnership will be used to showcase the Samsung Smart TV product range through innovative content such as the team’s first promo film which has been shot in Ultra HD.

“Despite the obvious synergies in technological performance between the cars and our televisions, for Samsung this is much more than just a sponsorship,” said Guy Kinnell, Director and Head of TV/AV, Samsung UK and Ireland. “This is about using Samsung’s relentless innovation and passion for excellence to help raise the bar in motorsport.”

InterGTM has charged Michael Meadows and Richard Kent to lead their on-track assault. Both drivers shone in junior single-seater series as they looked to reach Formula One, but have since switched to GT racing and recognise the career opportunity offered by Samsung Smart Motorsport’s entry into the category.

Michael who is the reigning Porsche Carrera Cup GB Champion will work with GT rookie Kent to help deliver the programme objectives both on and off-the track, with both drivers getting the opportunity to act as ambassadors for a blue-chip brand.

“With Samsung Smart Motorsport we have attempted to create a platform that can genuinely showcase blue-chip brands,” said Nick Downes, Managing Director, InterGTM. “We have selected two fantastic young drivers, both of whom are energetic and ambitious – not only to win championships, but to develop their respective careers off-track. We hope this partnership will start to outline what can be achieved in motorsport.”

“We have been working very closely with Samsung to help create a scalable platform which can grow throughout motorsport and help socialise its brand and products to a very loyal and knowledgeable audience,” said Paul Mace of InterGTM.

“We’re confident that we can help them achieve their objective of contributing to positive change within the sport, whist concurrently driving new business opportunities which will help qualify their investment.”

Porsche Carrera Cup runs on the UK’s premium motorsport package, TOCA, and will provide Samsung an opportunity to engage with more than 35,000 fans at each event and a further 19m viewers via live TV coverage on ITV.

The first race of the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup GB will mark the championship’s 200th race and also the 50th of the remarkable 911 model. In a decade the Porsche Carrera Cup has generated over £40m for the British Motorsport Industry.

Changing the Formula One Aesthetic Tue, 15 Jan 2013 17:39:37 +0000

With the 2013 Formula One season fast approaching, Interstate has recently created the identity and editorial styling of a new and insightful publication about the inner workings of this complex sport. Entitled Chicane, the publication delves into the twists and turns of the world’s most sophisticated sporting business and provides detail analysis of every aspect of its operation.

CHICANE, edition 001 takes an experimental and innovative approach aiming to extend the breadth and depth of the current Formula One coverage. Editorially, Chicane is authorative strategic reporting, using many specialist contributors from within the sport itself. It’s essential reading for anyone working specifically within Formula One and more generally anyone simply interested in the world’s most sophisticated sporting business.

Visually Chicane had to shine in many environments: in a racing team’s motorhome, in a business aviation lounge or in the offices of a government trade mission. To achieve this we developed a clean, stylish and confident design, taking more inspiration from the technology and fashion sectors than motor sport. The bold cover image and more ‘brooding’ colour palette is intended to create a sense of mystery and theatre, using a close up of the suspended sculptural work of artist Paul Veroude.

An elegantly simple masthead employs subtle type detailing that is reflected in image framing, border usage and information graphics throughout the spreads. A design to mitigate the ‘page turning’ of most Formula One publications.

Chicane will also extend in to a tablet version with unique and exclusive film and animation content.

If it looks fast, it generally is fast! Tue, 20 Nov 2012 17:45:34 +0000 Interstate’s Dragon takes victory in the Macau Grand Prix.

Working directly with Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH and the hugely successful Carlin Formula 3 team we created two striking ‘Year of the Dragon’ liveries in Chinese national colours for the final race of the 2012 Formula 3 championship in Macau this weekend.

Felix da Costa, leading every lap on the winding street circuit drove the red car to the team’s 248th race win while Daniel Abt, driving the second dragon car finished 12th.

Design Laps Thu, 26 Jul 2012 13:52:51 +0000 They say, 'What goes around, comes around.' and this seems quite true for the world of design and motorsport. They say, ‘What goes around, comes around.’ and this seems quite true for the world of design and motorsport. Surfacing on Nick’s desk recently, the beautiful 1986 Austrian Grand Prix leaflet alongside a rather identical angled 2012 Singapore Grand Prix version.

In the 26 years between, nothing much has changed aside from the designer’s media choice (was paint, now pixel) the car is now ‘generic’ rather than a specific Ferrari and the chequered flag of old unintentionally being echoed in the oh-so-2012 QR code. It seems ironic that the leaflet of old didn’t have to carry as much information even though there was no internet or social sharing to ‘find out more’.

Will the 2012 leaflet be so fondly cherished in 26 years time? Check this blog in 2038 and we’ll let you know…

Goodness Gracious Wed, 18 Jul 2012 17:56:48 +0000 The Lotus marque took centre stage at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed. During a black tie dinner on Thursday night Lord March revealed one of Gerry Judah's most dramatic and elegant works yet.

The Lotus marque took centre stage at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed. During a black tie dinner on Thursday night Lord March revealed one of Gerry Judah’s most dramatic and elegant works yet. Something between a mobius strip and infinity symbol it seemed to never stop. On every surface of the ‘monocoque’ structure sat a Lotus Formula 1 car from the sixties to the present day. And in a wonderful finale, the temporary installation was dramatically presented with a display of classical music, fireworks and illuminations.  All of the feature sculptures have been impressive but this one was truly beautiful and if this isn’t a shot of adrenaline for Lotus then I don’t know what might be.

From Monaco to Bedford Row Fri, 10 Feb 2012 14:55:06 +0000 Congratulations to leading Formula One photographer Darren Heath and the Collyer Bristow Motorsports team for hosting a super private view last night at their Bedford Row office gallery space. The exhibition, which runs until 16th February displays Darren’s own selection of his best work from the 2011 F1 season. The stunning A2 and A0 images really convey the colour, energy, excitement and glamour of the sport and are clearly shot by a ‘snapper’ who simply loves going racing. Darren has always managed to capture the unique character and atmosphere of an event from the often extreme weather conditions of Spa and Silverstone, to the wonderful natural light of the arabic and asian races and he is constantly discovering new and unusual vantage points. There was much discussion about the very cool Monaco harbour ’tilt shift’ shot – (just what is it that makes it look like a flotilla of toys) to the crazy image of double World Champion Sebastian Vettel racing beneath the busy twin fly-overs in Singapore.

If you’ve never had reason to walk into a solicitors practice, you do now.

The Power of F1 in Bahrain Wed, 08 Feb 2012 22:07:38 +0000

Globe trotting architects and Grand Prix circuit designers, Hermann Tilke and Peter Wahl remind themselves as to the ‘Power of Formula 1′ on a barmy evening in Sakhir during the last Grand Prix there in 2010. The two-book, 360 page showcase took Interstate some 5,000 hours to research, compose and produce and augmented Formula One’s commercial operations in 2010 when it added a Russian fixture and UBS as a global partner.
