Sports facilitated by Electronic Systems. In short and honest terms its Competitive Video games.

]]>
Sport has always been and will continue to be a big part of society. Whether it’s as a hobby or something more serious, whether you’re a fan or not, there’s just no escaping sport! Take the Premier League, it has an estimated worldwide following of 1.5 billion fans. That’s roughly a fifth of the world and that’s just one league in one sport! Let alone all the other sports and countries! Sport is accessible by everyone, generally speaking no matter what language you speak everyone understands the rule of the sport they’re playing! It literally is a language of its own!

Although today it’s a different kind of “sport” I’m focusing on. In fact when we hear the word sport we naturally begin to think of things like; football, rugby, athletics, swimming and so forth. For some people horse riding may be on the list and others bowls. Everyone has an opinion on sport, be it enthusiastic or not! However I’m sure one of the last thing many of us think about when sports come to mind is Video Games, but Video Games are in fact the fastest growing sport globally right now.

“eSports” short for “Electronic-Sports” is more or less what it sounds like. Sports facilitated by Electronic Systems. In short and honest terms its Competitive Video games. But don’t let that take away from the respectability though. This isn’t teenagers sat in their bedrooms playing too many hours a day. Most of these games are team based games involving crazy amounts of strategy and skill played by people who have dedicated themselves to a career in it. And just like any other sport it’s broadcasted live to viewers and even hosted in stadiums the same size as some of the largest football ones attracting fans from all over the world. But for me the great thing about eSports is anyone can watch and anyone can try the game for themselves.

eSports is becoming such a big thing that Turner (the American TV company) are hosting a televised league. They’re so confident in eSports becoming a regular activity in society that they predict that 52 million people will watch the league. Split into two 10 week seasons with a prize pool of 1.2 million for each season this is no joke! Prize money in eSports is actually somewhat crazy. Last year the “Dota 2 International” (premier tournament for the game Dota 2) had a prize pool of $18 million. This meant first Place taking home $6 million between the five of them. That’s one tournament out of 100+ hosted across the year. A whopping $1million each not including salaries and sponsorships. For a couple of days work.

Although it’s not a couple of days work. Yes the tournament might have span the length of the weekend but the effort put in leading up to that weekend isn’t measurable. It’s hours upon hours sat practicing, reviewing, improving and so forth. What has to be taken into consideration, is that these players will have given up everything the same way that professional athletes do. For them this is their career and passion. It’s their full time job and always was. It can take years and years of practicing and developing before even beginning a career as a professional gamer and that’s only the start. Then you need to work your way up and impress!

eSports bridges the gap between spectator sports and playing sports yourself. It’s far easier to relate to the game and develop a deeper understanding. Anyone can play too (age limits apply). These games can be played for fun and that’s the brilliant thing. The same way you can have a kick about at the park, and be a huge football fan following a team. You can enjoy these games in the same way with the teams having similar followings to that of other sports. The players have personalities and the games have stories (well some of them!) eSports just feels a lot more personal than traditional sports. In my opinion anyway!

Will eSports one day ultimately replace traditional sports? Will it continue to rival them and grow exponentially as it has been? Or is it potentially a fad? With a projected 350 million fans globally and a market size of $1 Billion by 2017, only time will tell. But eSports shows no sign of going anywhere right now. So ask yourself; what is the future of sports?! For me it’s looking electrical!

The FIA Formula-e (all electric race series) inaugural season came to a dramatic climax at Battersea Park last weekend. The team here at Interstate took the opportunity to take in the atmosphere and action – and we weren’t let down!.

NextEV Team China Racing driver Nelson Piquet sealed the Drivers’ Championship by a single point from Sébastien Buemi to bring the season to a close in style.

A fully packed weekend of racing created an immense buzz across the city with almost 60,000 people attending the event over the three days.

Having been involved from the very beginning of this innovative racing series, the Interstate team felt a great sense of accomplishment seeing many of our conceptual ideas brought to life in our home city. We are already looking forward to next season and being part of such a game changing motorsport series.

We were excited to see a glimpse of what is to come at the FIA Formula-e London e-Prix this weekend. The official Formula-e race car has been on show at Westfield Shopping Centre, White City – so we took the opportunity to go get a close-up look of one of the stars of the show and take in the ‘electric’ atmosphere.

If this taster is anything to go by we are in for a real treat this race weekend at Battersea Park!

Conceptualised, planned and designed by Interstate, the 2014 edition of The Power of Formula 1 is our latest project hot off the press. With the launch at this weekends Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, this spectacular hybrid package of print and digital is soon to be in the hands of an exclusive audience.

Interstate have produced the ‘purpose document for Formula 1, more of an experience than a printed product. An experience that truly reflects the synthesis of sport and business that combine to form Formula 1 in the 21st Century.

Over 3.5kg in weight, this box set of books and digital material feature over 500 stunning images from a range of Formula 1’s top photographers supported by over 20,000 words. All of this adds up to be one of the most extensive and comprehensive brand documents we have produced. With the pinnacle of motor sport as the client, we knew we had to take this to the next level.

See below for a sneak peak of Interstate’s print minders casting their eyes over the job on press.

Interstate, Lamborghini and Monster teamed up to deliver a high performance audio extravaganza within the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster, two like-minded brands, playing two different soundtracks coming together in perfect harmony.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, Monster further enhanced one of the most dramatic super sports cars of a generation, the 750hp Lamborghini Veneno Roadster by installing a unique cutting edge 1,500 watt audio system. The product of a lifetime love for Lamborghini by the Head Monster, Noel Lee and his new business partner, producer Swizz Beatz, the Veneno’s Pure Monster Sound was an experience “not for the faint-hearted”. Quiet appropriate for such a car.

Interstate’s role in all of this – to bring together a $4.5 million dollar hyper-car and a $50k sound system in what is surely a modern day version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at the world’s largest electronics show. With a pressing deadline we created an attention grabbing, sophisticated piece of printed collateral to explain the story behind these two powerhouses sharing the world sound stage. Going from a design studio in London to Las Vegas printers in a matter of days.

This partnership went on to be one of the feel good stories of CES 2014, deservedly featuring in a majority of reviews for the top 10 products from the show as well as attracting the cameras of US networks and social commentary from celebrity visitors.

An all round Smart performance http://www.interstateofmind.com/an-all-round-smart-performance/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/an-all-round-smart-performance/#comments Wed, 03 Apr 2013 11:01:15 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=2962 A 1st hand experience of InterGTM's Porsche Carrera Cup Team, Samsung Smart Motorsport's inaugural race at Brands Hatch.

]]>
This Easter weekend saw the first race of a new season for the British Touring Car Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup GB. It was also the first race for our client, InterGTM‘s Porsche Carrera Cup team, Samsung Smart Motorsport.

All of the build up and hype boiled down to delivering a blistering performance this weekend. Weeks of testing, excitement, media launches, travel and preparation led to the first race of the season, which was held at legendary British circuit, Brands Hatch.

Our drivers, Michael Meadows and Richard Kent, knew exactly what was was expected of them, and with a strong, experienced team behind them, they went into the weekend confident and focused.

The qualifying round brought Michael into 2nd on the grid for race day 1, with Richard a little further back in 6th. The cold weather didn’t distract the drivers, and they both put in impressive displays which found Michael finishing 2nd and Richard finishing 6th. On race day 2, Michael started from pole position, with Richard again starting from 6th. The second race had more drama than the first, with Michael taking an unfortunate spin off the track. While trying to overtake on the outside of a corner, Michael received a rather controversial nudge from another driver, which sent him wide on the grass, resulting in a spin across the track and hitting a tyre wall backwards. Fortunately, the car was still able to drive, and Michael was able to put in some of the fastest lap times of the weekend, but only able to play catch up and finish 9th. Richard put in a consistant drive and secured a comfortable 5th place finish.

Across the two days of racing, Michael currently sits in 3rd in the driver championship, with Richard just behind in 4th, while Samsung Smart Motorsport sit comfortably in 2nd in the team championship.

From my point of view, visiting Brands Hatch was a fantastic experience! As I’ve been involved in this job since day one, it’s was great to finally see our graphics in a racing environment. Seeing the transporter garage, fully liveried cars, team uniform, all in application was incredibly rewarding.

As this was also my first time at a race weekend, I was unsure what to expect. The Brands Hatch environment was very exciting, despite the cold weather, and the race events were action packed and thrilling!

A great weekend in all, and I look forward to the second race weekend, Donington Park on the 19th-21st of April.

As mentioned on an earlier post, we’ve been busy working on a new brand for the Samsung Smart Motorsport Porsche Carrera Cup Team. This comprised of a launch night in the Porsche Centre, Mayfair; a glittering night where the new livery was unveiled. But we’d been busy much earlier slowly dressing the cars each time they went out for performance testing at circuits at home and abroad.

Next step is the first race, on Easter weekend at Brands Hatch. Good luck team!

Follow the team at the official Instagram, Flickr, Twitter or Facebook feeds or check out the InterGTM website.

Below is the official press release.

Samsung Electronics UK today announces its partnership with InterGTM to run a hand selected team in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship. The InterGTM team, will enter as ‘Samsung Smart Motorsport’ and the partnership will be used to showcase the Samsung Smart TV product range through innovative content such as the team’s first promo film which has been shot in Ultra HD.

“Despite the obvious synergies in technological performance between the cars and our televisions, for Samsung this is much more than just a sponsorship,” said Guy Kinnell, Director and Head of TV/AV, Samsung UK and Ireland. “This is about using Samsung’s relentless innovation and passion for excellence to help raise the bar in motorsport.”

InterGTM has charged Michael Meadows and Richard Kent to lead their on-track assault. Both drivers shone in junior single-seater series as they looked to reach Formula One, but have since switched to GT racing and recognise the career opportunity offered by Samsung Smart Motorsport’s entry into the category.

Michael who is the reigning Porsche Carrera Cup GB Champion will work with GT rookie Kent to help deliver the programme objectives both on and off-the track, with both drivers getting the opportunity to act as ambassadors for a blue-chip brand.

“With Samsung Smart Motorsport we have attempted to create a platform that can genuinely showcase blue-chip brands,” said Nick Downes, Managing Director, InterGTM. “We have selected two fantastic young drivers, both of whom are energetic and ambitious – not only to win championships, but to develop their respective careers off-track. We hope this partnership will start to outline what can be achieved in motorsport.”

“We have been working very closely with Samsung to help create a scalable platform which can grow throughout motorsport and help socialise its brand and products to a very loyal and knowledgeable audience,” said Paul Mace of InterGTM.

“We’re confident that we can help them achieve their objective of contributing to positive change within the sport, whist concurrently driving new business opportunities which will help qualify their investment.”

Porsche Carrera Cup runs on the UK’s premium motorsport package, TOCA, and will provide Samsung an opportunity to engage with more than 35,000 fans at each event and a further 19m viewers via live TV coverage on ITV.

The first race of the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup GB will mark the championship’s 200th race and also the 50th of the remarkable 911 model. In a decade the Porsche Carrera Cup has generated over £40m for the British Motorsport Industry.
