Neon Nostalgia

Neon Nostalgia

11th August 2010

It is Concours week in Monterey and as I wondered around the exhibits on the golf course adjacent to the hotel where we are staying I was drawn by the bright lights emanating from one particular tent. A great collection of automotive neon signs on display from Dave’s Nostalgia.

The staying-power of Formula 1

The staying-power of Formula 1

8th August 2010

This afternoon at Laguna Seca I watched a race featuring classic Formula 1 cars. It’s amazing to think that these cars, some of which are over 30 years old, are still maintained and kept in race condition for reunion events like this. Having recently worked on The Power of Formula 1 project it was also great to see some of the cars featured in the flesh… or bodywork!

Lotus Evora Cup GT4 Photo Shoot

Lotus Evora Cup GT4 Photo Shoot

24th July 2010

Yesterday I visited the Lotus Cars factory in Norfolk to photograph the new Evora Cup GT4 with renowned motorsport and automotive photographer Patrick Gosling. The day long shoot coincided with the car’s shakedown track testing session in the morning at the company’s Hethel Test Track before moving on to Snetterton Circuit in the afternoon to really put the car through its paces!

Capturing It!

Capturing It!

5th July 2010

On more than one occasion recently I have noticed some quite prominent exposure of the font we used for the Play F.C. branding project. I suspect this is just coincidence and down to the fact that since using it I have become visually aware of its characteristics. Interestingly though, albeit for one example, the context in which it is used is far removed from the motive behind using it for Play F.C.

Buy Your London Borough for £495

Buy Your London Borough for £495

30th June 2010

London artist Stephen Walter has hand-drawn a map of all 32 London boroughs to create a fictitious island of London, simply titled ‘The Island’. Taking a year and a half to create, the map accurately details all of London’s hamlets through geographic locations, descriptions of their surroundings, and tells of events that have happened from years gone by as well as his own experiences in each place. On display at the British Library, the map can be viewed in the current exhibition Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art until 19th September 2010 (and also in great detail on their website).

The backdrop for the interview featured the Play F.C identity designed by Interstate. The Geometry of Pasta

The Geometry of Pasta

4th June 2010

Judging a book by it’s cover I thought it would be a lovely piece of information design about the many different pasta types but I never imagined it to be a fully functioning cookbook.

Get a better taste for the book through it’s promotional website and check out the accompanying animation.
Buon appetito!

Why Design?

Why Design?

20th April 2010

‘Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.
But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it.’
John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972

Brand Foolery

Brand Foolery

1st April 2010

Each year WCRS (BMW’s advertising agency) produces a tactical April Fool’s day advert which appears in the broadsheet press on April 1st only.
A company that until recently was quite ‘Joy-less’ has created a tradition of humour in the UK press. A great way to use a different angle to drive awareness and show a different side to your brand personality.

Data is a Girl’s Best Friend

Data is a Girl’s Best Friend

26th March 2010

I never imagined the day when two of my favourite things [statement jewellery and information design] would fuse together to create such an interesting proposition. Who would have thought you could wear the weather around your wrist or the story of the highs and lows of the price of gold over the past 30 years dangling from your neck? Gone are the days of wearing a crystal ball on my finger and an owl Christmas decoration around my neck, I’m getting myself some info jewels…

Dish of the Day

Dish of the Day

17th March 2010

For St Patrick’s Day, Nathan Yau (a designer and writer for FlowingData.com) has used information design to illustrate the making of a traditional Irish corned beef and cabbage recipe. It’s quite an interesting approach, there are no images of the finished dish, nor any raw ingredients, so you will need to use your imagination for what the end result will look like (unless you have previously made or tasted it).
