Pick Me Up 2011

21st March 2011

On Saturday, Chrissie, Jess and myself visited Pick Me Up contemporary graphic arts fair at Somerset House. Pick Me Up is the UK’s first contemporary graphic arts fair which is now in it’s 2nd year, after a successful first show last April.

I was very excited about visiting this exhibition as last year I intended to go, but was unable to, so this year I put extra effort into attending, and made sure I booked my ticket a good week in advance just to be sure.

I enjoyed seeing prints from some of my favorite illustrators, typographers and designers.

Some of the highlights for me were seeing work from Jessica Hische, Tom Gauld, Andy Rementer and Robbies Brown Shoes, all of which have different styles and approaches to their work, and it appeals to me in different ways.

Jessica Hische is an incredibly tallented Brooklyn based typographer / illustrator, probably best known for her Daily Drop Caps work.

Tom Gauld is a cartoonist and illustrator who’s work I have been a fan of for a long time as it never fails to put a smile on my face.

I am quite new to Andy Rementer‘s work, I recently saw some on a blog I reguarly visit and instantly fell in love with his quirky sense of humor and fun illustrative style.

A good friend of mine pointed me in the direction of Robbies Brown Shoes work as it turned out he is a fellow North Devon chap himself. I was familiar with a few pieces of his work already, but it was great to see his prints in person. His spoof celebrity illustrations really humored me at the exhibition, especially his Andi Peters print. Robbies Brown Shoes is one part of Puck Collective.

All in all we had an amazing time working our way through the different areas of Somerset House, discovering charming new work and stumbling across work we were familiar with and loved.

Pick Me Up is on at Somerset House until March 27th.
