BBC GoodFood and Ebury Press relaunch their best-selling cookbook series this week with a modern and colourful new design, crafted by Interstate.

Celebrating its 25th birthday, BBC GoodFood has been feeding the nation with delicious dishes and giving top tips for the kitchen. To celebrate this benchmark, BBC GoodFood has recently refreshed its identity and Interstate was tasked with bringing it to life across its highly successful set of best-selling books.

We created a fresh and colourful design, guaranteed to stand out on the shelves and easy to use in the kitchen.

We are delighted with the results and can’t wait to get our aprons on.

Charred & Scruffed (Soaked & Smoked) http://www.interstateofmind.com/charred-scruffed-soaked-smoked/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/charred-scruffed-soaked-smoked/#comments Wed, 23 May 2012 14:52:52 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=2108 A very wet OB in NYC saw APL prove that even the weather is no match for his BBQ skills.

Promoting his latest book, designed here at Interstate, he cooked seemingly half a cow directly on the coals with the help of his wife’s hairdryer.

Great viewing, great food and may we say, great book.

Lose Yourself in a Good Book http://www.interstateofmind.com/lose-yourself-in-a-good-book/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/lose-yourself-in-a-good-book/#comments Wed, 09 Feb 2011 09:56:15 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=1018 Last Friday saw the re-release of Marian Keyes’ latest novel, The Brightest Star in the Sky, which we at Interstate are very excited about. Having been approached by Penguin back in October last year, following our hugely successful Jamie Oliver/Penguin collaboration, we were briefed to create a fresh new look for the Queen of Chick-Lit. With her writing described as wry, perceptive and charming, and with an army of readers already hooked on her grown-up brand of fiction, Marian’s books needed a cover to match this complex and intelligent interior.

Following much research into the lady herself and her audience, we settled on a typographic style which would allow growth through not only this current book and those to come, but also for the entire back catalogue. The final look uses connective lines illustrating the emotional journey that the reader is taken on, leading into key elements from the book’s content. The typographic look was softened by the publishers through the use of a sketched vignette and an advertising campaign, advised by ourselves, was rolled out at the end of last week. We even saw a TV ad over the weekend…

A few days ago I received an e-newsletter from Amazon showcasing some of their bestselling books including the recently published ‘The Geometry of Pasta’. Judging a book by it’s cover I thought it would be a lovely piece of information design about the many different pasta types but I never imagined it to be a fully functioning cookbook. The graphic approach is unexpected and simple, yet so successful in it’s concept. Author, (Michelin starred chef) Jacob Kenedy educates the reader on the benefits of using specific pasta shapes with complementary sauces in over 100 recipes, and also introduces a brief history of each type of pasta featured. Caz Hildebrand, Creative Partner at Here Design, designed the book which has been printed entirely in black and white, using simple vector illustrations an understated typography.

Why Design? http://www.interstateofmind.com/why-design/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/why-design/#comments Tue, 20 Apr 2010 09:25:21 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=222 ‘Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.
But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it.’
John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972

‘Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.
But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but words can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it.’
John Berger, Ways of Seeing, 1972

John Berger wrote this as part of his introduction to his 1972 book Ways of Seeing, in which he explored the power and immediacy of the visual. Amongst other topics he looked at the way we bring assumptions to bear almost instantly on what we see, sometimes negatively, sometimes positively, but often without even realising it.

Two important things come from this work that act as reinforcement for the existence of good design, the first is the immediate nature of what we see. It acts on so many levels and provokes so much realised and subconscious reaction practically within an instant that, as a medium, it is unmatched.

The second is that, entirely because of the first point, it needs to be done well. Recognition, as Berger points out, is a major factor – as is association. Design, therefore, has to be a very controlled and considered practice, intended to deliver the correct messages and nuances whilst deftly avoiding summoning the incorrect ones. What may seem a simple logo is often the result of hundreds of hours of consideration and crafting.
But good design cannot achieve the impossible. It certainly cannot do the whole job on its own. The promise built into the design must be fulfilled by the client. As Berger goes on to state;

‘The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sun set. We know that the earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight.’
