Al Riwaq + Alwan 338 http://www.interstateofmind.com/al-riwaq-alwan-338/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/al-riwaq-alwan-338/#comments Fri, 20 Apr 2012 13:22:14 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=2047 Coinciding with the 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix is Alwan 338, a month-long arts festival introducing Bahrain’s up and coming generation of conceptual artists. Exploring the possibilities generated by placing art in the public space, the event is centered around three key locations: Local gallery Al Riwaq, Bohemia – a vacant building in the heart of Adliya, and The Park – a new open public space with unconventional planting and quirky seating.

At Al Riwaq, a London Tube inspired map presents you with a local guide to selected street bars, restaurants and venues, film screenings, readings, exhibitions, performances and workshops. In a bid to promote public engagement with the outdoors, visitors are invited to go on a journey following a series of unique commissioned public art installations.

Our team is present and reporting about a very funky experience.

Bass Notes: The Film Posters of Saul Bass http://www.interstateofmind.com/bass-notes-the-film-posters-of-saul-bass/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/bass-notes-the-film-posters-of-saul-bass/#comments Mon, 21 Feb 2011 17:03:34 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=1091 Saturday afternoon Alex and I ventured down to the rainy streets of Shoreditch to check out a little gallery called Kemistry, on Charlotte Road. Exhibiting ‘Bass Notes: The Film Posters of Saul Bass’, the collection brings together some of Bass’ classic film posters, film titles and film festival posters from the Lloyd Northover donation to the BFI.

With a compendium of iconographic posters commissioned by influential directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick, Bass really sets the standard for effective cinema posters, giving a sense of the tone of a film long before the audience will have even seen it.

As a massive film fan and of course graphics, I found this to be the perfect exhibition, I only wish it was bigger. Viewing these pieces only reminds me that less is more. Incredible graphic work from a pre-digital age.

As the king of the film poster, no graphic designer has ever made a greater impact on the world of film, than that of Saul Bass. Check it out for yourself; Bass Notes: The Film Posters of Saul Bass, showing at Kemistry Gallery until 17th  March 2011.

A century of Olympic posters http://www.interstateofmind.com/a-century-of-olympic-posters/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/a-century-of-olympic-posters/#comments Tue, 02 Nov 2010 10:29:43 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=695 Passing the local library, I stumbled upon a graphic designers dream; a collection of Olympic posters showcasing the past century of games. Styles have changed over the years from strong, almost propaganda style glorious paintings, to minimalist iconic graphic art. In my opinion, the style peaked in Mexico '68 (main image).

The exhibition is still running; well worth a visit. Apologies for the image quality, the lights were low to protect the prints. Better images of the collection can be found in the Independent article here.

The jury’s out if the 2012 posters become design classics, but as long as they leave off any reference to double decker buses, bowler hats, ‘Cool Britannia’, the 2012 Logo, accompanying typeface and McDonalds Logo, they should be great.

Next time you’re passing by the studio, take a stroll down the road to Kensington Gardens and take in the Anish Kapoor installations (Turning The World Upside Down). Beautifully polished surfaces reflecting a dramatic Autumn sky.

These truly are things to behold (especially in the morning before the crowds arrive), but points deducted from one of the pieces where it’s under 24 hour guard and you can’t get the full effect whereby your reflection is the right way up but the world behind you is inverted. The people of London are too grubby or prone to vandalism to fully appreciate high-art.

The exhibition runs from 28 September 2010 – 13 March 2011. Anish Kapoor image by Dominic Lipinski/PA.

After months of refurbishment, Bahraini Gallery Al Riwaq relaunched today as Al Riwaq Art Space,
showcasing the solo exhibition of local artist Waheeda Malullah.

In late Autumn 2009, Interstate was invited to join forces with Al Riwaq as the gallery’s new Creative Partner Al Riwaq’s vision to promote creativity and art value was key in creating their new identity concept.
The new space will function as a cultural hub where artists and the public can exchange ideas, provoke debate and inspire and nurture creative thinking and production.

The new dual-language identity and website is the first in a number of exciting changes that will see Al Riwaq reinforcing their status as a leading establishment in Bahrain’s art and cultural scene.
