It is incredible to see the athletes constantly push themselves and overcome any obstacle thrown at them.

Channel 4 are showing the Paralympics from the 29th of August to the 9th of September. 4creative have produced an incredibly powerful advert entitled ‘Meet the Superhumans’, which really highlights how strong and brave these athletes are.

Due to the rights around the chosen music for the ad, we cannot embed the YouTube video, but if you follow this link, you can view the video on the C4Paralypics channel.

QPRide http://www.interstateofmind.com/qpride/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/qpride/#comments Wed, 17 Aug 2011 09:19:04 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=1682 In early 2011 one football club in London raised a large silver trophy into the air and 18,000 fans roared their approval. The club was a small club by today’s standards and the home crowd would barely fill a quarter of the seats in a stadium such as the Camp Nou in Barcelona. Even up the road at Stamford Bridge you’ll find a larger crowd. But this club had something no other London team had: genuine team spirit and a belief in what could be.

QPR’s first match in the Premier League could not have gone worse. As the fans emptied the stadium on Saturday belief seemed far from many minds.  However, on that walk back to White City soon there was talk of overcoming adversity, it will be better next time, good things are yet to come. A genuine team spirit and a willpower to believe.

QPR has always survived by pulling together more, by locking together and trying harder. And all those things are still true.

Well, after a few weeks of less spectacular wins, draws and losses for the Interstate Team, the boys were back on pitch this monday with renewed energy. Up against the FC Cartils for the second and final time this season, having drawn with them on their previous meeting, spirits were tense but hopeful for a win.

To be honest, I had already decided I was going to entitle this blog, the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre and it looked as though it might be in favour of our boys with the first goal of the game going straight to the back of the opponent’s net. The Cartils saw red, hammering one in return almost immediately. But the InterBoys got one straight back and managed to keep it that way til half time.

After the swap, the mood changed on pitch and the goal difference rose as quickly as the temper. After another 6 goals went past our bewildered keeper, it was all over. Bruised and dejected, the boys left the pitch all wishing they’d gone home and spent time with their wives and girlfriends for Valentine’s Day instead of dancing the vicious tango with this angry little team. Let’s hope the rest of the WAGs are as understanding as me.

On the upside, with the final score at 7-4 to the Cartils, the team is back on its spiritual path for the quest of number 11. Go on Mother Nature…

This one goes up to 11… http://www.interstateofmind.com/this-one-goes-up-to-11/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/this-one-goes-up-to-11/#comments Fri, 21 Jan 2011 15:32:38 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=951 Sometimes it’s hard to deny that the universe is attempting to contact us. And since the start of the DesignWeek football season back in December, I’ve been getting this nagging feeling that won’t go away. The Interstate football team’s first outing saw them starting on the back foot. Up against the Man Utd of the design world, Winkreative, our boys were a man down and unprepared for the battering they were about to receive. 30 mins and 11 conceded goals later, captain Nigel dragged his wounded troops off the pitch with a heavy heart and an even heavier league position to pick up.

The following week saw a complete turnaround for the Interstateteam. Firing on all cylinders and up against the cockily-named Up-Starts of international Start Creative, this time the 11 goals went in the correct end and marked our first victory. But last week, the tables turned once again. Without the support of their gaffer, the In-a-state boys floundered one more time and conceded another 9 goals, themselves scoring 2.

So what is mother nature trying to tell us? Well, the appearance of the number 11 in all games so far (by the way I’m counting 9 + 2 as another occurrence!) is just downright weird and is sometimes taken as a “magical” message posing the question of equilibrium. Carrying the vibrational frequency of balance in it’s parallel numerals, number 11 has lofty connotations of higher ideals, congruency and fulfilment.

The balance of work and play or of masculine and feminine assets; I’m not entirely sure what we are supposed to glean from this other than maybe not all of the team are as manly as they appear? Or maybe it’s simply time for Nigel to switch up the formation to the trusty old 4-4-2 pattern or whatever equivalent works when you’re playing 6-a-side? But I don’t profess to know anything about the beautiful game; I just watched my second football match this week during which I woke myself up with the noise of my own snoring.

So maybe the balance will come through one bad game, one good, so on and so forth. Which means, spiritually speaking, I have high hopes for this coming week, when we face our arch-nemesis Winkreative again for a rematch to be reckoned with. Let’s hope the boys turn it all the way up to 11 this time and that nature is on our team.

Capturing It! http://www.interstateofmind.com/capturing-it/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/capturing-it/#comments Mon, 05 Jul 2010 17:18:54 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=153 On more than one occasion recently I have noticed some quite prominent exposure of the font we used for the Play F.C. branding project. On more than one occasion recently I have noticed some quite prominent exposure of the font we used for the Play F.C. branding project. I suspect this is just coincidence and down to the fact that since using it I have become visually aware of its characteristics. Interestingly though, albeit for one example, the context in which it is used is far removed from the motive behind using it for Play F.C.

The font in question is called ‘Capture It’ and is available as a free download from www.dafont.com. We decided Capture It was perfect for Play F.C. for two reasons. Firstly, it expressed our idea of stenciling messages and chants on grass (inspired by the painting of the white lines of a football pitch), and secondly, being a free download, it was ideally suited to the budget of this charitable cause.

I first saw it in use for The Expendables movie. However, the identity of this movie has since changed for its upcoming UK release and is now displayed in a distressed traditional serif font. I was at the cinema again last week and I noticed the font all over the posters promoting the new A-Team movie. On the movie’s official website the font gets even more exposure. It’s quite interesting that two of 2010’s biggest action films both decided to use this font for their promotional material, both obviously utilising its military stencil appeal. However, just to show we were not alone in using it to express a football theme I discovered some downloadable player profiles on the website of the Slovenian Football Association, they have used it to display the squad numbers of their players.

*For Charity

Interstate have recently designed the identity for a charity 6-a-side football tournament to take place at West Ham United’s Upton Park this summer. The event, scheduled for Wednesday June 9th (two days before the World Cup gets underway in South Africa) has been arranged by management consultancy Value Partners and aims to raise a substantial amount of money for the One to One Children’s Fund’s fight against HIV and AIDS amongst African children.

One to One Children’s Fund have teamed up with local partner Whizzkids United (WKU) and have developed a successful model which combines a sustainable HIV/AIDS school education Life Skills programme with football training and a “World Cup” graduation tournament. One to One and WKU recently launched a one year HIV prevention pilot programme in Rustenburg in the North West Province in South Africa – Rustenburg is a 2010 World Cup venue and will be the base camp and training ground for the England team. More information about this initiative and all One to One’s other good causes can be found on their website, www.one2onekids.org.

The London 6-a-side tournament has already received great interest and the sixteen team allocations are being reserved fast. As well as contributing to the great cause described above participants also get the chance to play football on the famous Upton Park pitch and, if they reach the final, play in a match officiated by the 2002 Fifa World Cup final referee Pierluigi Collina.

The tournament's master identity

The identity and naming for the event was inspired by the simple fact that everyone involved has one incentive – playing for charity. The ‘For Charity’ element lent itself nicely to a typographic twist of F.C. (Football Club) and so the name Play F.C. was evolved. The bold execution of the logo is reflected through a selection of impactful statements and calls to action with the aim of generating interest and encouraging involvement and support of the cause. An event website featuring the identity has recently been launched and a full set of event collateral is currently in progress, previews of which will appear on the blog soon.

In my opinion the words ‘global brand’ are overused in modern day football and are often taken out of context of what the ‘beautiful game’ stands for. However, as a designer with a growing interest in Arabic typography it was refreshing to see Real Madrid’s recent issue of language specific player shirts.

I’ve no doubt that Ronaldo’s worldwide marketability as well as his footballing talent was a major reason behind Real Madrid’s willingness to pay Manchester United £80 million for football’s most prized asset. With Ronaldo shirts tipped to outsell even that of David Beckham during his time at the Bernabeu, Real Madrid have decided to offer Japanese, Chinese and Arab fans Ronaldo shirts in their own language.

Ronaldo (or Cristiano) in Arabic, Chinese and Japanese

The part of me that thinks a centre forward should still only wear a jersey that displays the number nine and not even the player’s name says this is an over-the-top way of making more money, but the western graphic designer part of me only sees the characters and letterforms as intriguing and great to look at (although I believe the Arabic one reads ‘Cristiano’ and not ‘Ronaldo’). I just hope the trend doesn’t make it on to the pitch at next year’s World Cup or poor old John Motson will be lost for words!
