They say, ‘What goes around, comes around.’ and this seems quite true for the world of design and motorsport. Surfacing on Nick’s desk recently, the beautiful 1986 Austrian Grand Prix leaflet alongside a rather identical angled 2012 Singapore Grand Prix version.

In the 26 years between, nothing much has changed aside from the designer’s media choice (was paint, now pixel) the car is now ‘generic’ rather than a specific Ferrari and the chequered flag of old unintentionally being echoed in the oh-so-2012 QR code. It seems ironic that the leaflet of old didn’t have to carry as much information even though there was no internet or social sharing to ‘find out more’.

Will the 2012 leaflet be so fondly cherished in 26 years time? Check this blog in 2038 and we’ll let you know…

The Lotus marque took centre stage at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed. During a black tie dinner on Thursday night Lord March revealed one of Gerry Judah’s most dramatic and elegant works yet. Something between a mobius strip and infinity symbol it seemed to never stop. On every surface of the ‘monocoque’ structure sat a Lotus Formula 1 car from the sixties to the present day. And in a wonderful finale, the temporary installation was dramatically presented with a display of classical music, fireworks and illuminations.  All of the feature sculptures have been impressive but this one was truly beautiful and if this isn’t a shot of adrenaline for Lotus then I don’t know what might be.

State of the Art http://www.interstateofmind.com/state-of-the-art/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/state-of-the-art/#comments Fri, 20 Apr 2012 16:36:53 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=2058 Our esteemed Creative Director Nigel Gray is definitely of the old school. Put more fairly he’s uncomfortable with technology. He’s not the only one of course, it takes a particular kind of person to actually enjoy working with computers and that delight doesn’t always exist in the creative brain. So how does the classically trained Creative Director work with the modern studio? The answer is seemingly so simple, you get him a brush. Well, not just any brush, a beautifully styled Nomad capacitive brush for the iPad. Combined with a clever paint app he’s able to sketch on the go and email his sketches direct to the studio. No paper sketchbooks, scanning, file storage and retrieval, just emailed direct from the app.

Here are a few sketches Nigel has created (and emailed back) from this weekends Bahrain Grand Prix.

From Monaco to Bedford Row http://www.interstateofmind.com/from-monaco-to-bedford-row/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/from-monaco-to-bedford-row/#comments Fri, 10 Feb 2012 14:55:06 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=1963 Congratulations to leading Formula One photographer Darren Heath and the Collyer Bristow Motorsports team for hosting a super private view last night at their Bedford Row office gallery space. The exhibition, which runs until 16th February displays Darren’s own selection of his best work from the 2011 F1 season. The stunning A2 and A0 images really convey the colour, energy, excitement and glamour of the sport and are clearly shot by a ‘snapper’ who simply loves going racing. Darren has always managed to capture the unique character and atmosphere of an event from the often extreme weather conditions of Spa and Silverstone, to the wonderful natural light of the arabic and asian races and he is constantly discovering new and unusual vantage points. There was much discussion about the very cool Monaco harbour ’tilt shift’ shot – (just what is it that makes it look like a flotilla of toys) to the crazy image of double World Champion Sebastian Vettel racing beneath the busy twin fly-overs in Singapore.

If you’ve never had reason to walk into a solicitors practice, you do now.

The Power of F1 in Bahrain http://www.interstateofmind.com/the-power-of-f1-in-bahrain/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/the-power-of-f1-in-bahrain/#comments Wed, 08 Feb 2012 22:07:38 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=1956

Globe trotting architects and Grand Prix circuit designers, Hermann Tilke and Peter Wahl remind themselves as to the ‘Power of Formula 1′ on a barmy evening in Sakhir during the last Grand Prix there in 2010. The two-book, 360 page showcase took Interstate some 5,000 hours to research, compose and produce and augmented Formula One’s commercial operations in 2010 when it added a Russian fixture and UBS as a global partner.

I sat in the cinema on the weekend watching ‘Senna’. It was thrilling, enchanting, exciting, beautiful, informative, horrific and incredibly sad in parts. All a movie should be pushing all your emotions. I was amazed at the racing. I laughed at Jean Marie Balestre. I shook at the crashes. I was angry at Prost. I did not know just what Senna was going through to win and lose those Championships and of course I wept at his death.

Once home I hunted through my collection of Formula One images. I have been involved in the sport for many many years and am proud and fortunate to have many great memories. So here to share with you are my special images of Ayrton. Yes that funny little person with short spiky hair is me. The other images were from another race I can’t remember which one but I was sure he was looking at me. Well I will always like to think so….

In Pursuit of Excellence http://www.interstateofmind.com/in-pursuit-of-excellence/ http://www.interstateofmind.com/in-pursuit-of-excellence/#comments Fri, 25 Mar 2011 16:07:17 +0000 http://www.interstateofmind.com/?p=1308 Way back in ’06, we were appointed to formulate the brand identity for the FIA Institute Excellence programme, intended to form the cornerstone of the FIA Institute’s aim to drive and reward excellence in all aspects of motor sport safety and sustainability.

The original Interstate design focused on the first iteration of the programme through the Institute’s Centres of Excellence. Now the Institute has made the most recent addition to its developing programme through the Young Driver Excellence Academy.

The Institute’s adaptation is still in evolution but its dynamics and modernity make a strong impression for the Young Driver Excellence Academy – with the gold shard, radiating from the centre of the ‘Vortex’. Still expressing the values of the organisation; Safety, Sustainability, Innovation and Excellence, the ‘Vortex’ marque now has youth and ambition on its side too – all under the watchful eye of former F1 driver and two-time Le Mans winner, Alex Wurz.

Richard Woods, Director General of the FIA Institute and long-standing Interstate client says:

“This selection event has been an incredible story for the FIA Institute. We started out with a process that was open to drivers across the world. After an exceptional response from the ASNs, we chose 18 drivers who arrived here in Austria on Saturday. From those 18 we have the 12 who will go forward for the season. But there really are no losers here. Those who haven’t been successful have spent three days in the company of world-class competitors and coaches and have had the opportunity to learn a huge amount.  Now we look ahead to our first year with the FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy.”

Here are shots of the 12 specially selected drivers attending their first of 6 workshops to be held across Europe.

The Business of Motorsport in Asia forum at the Singapore Exchange was an interesting session covering the impact of hosting a Formula 1 race in a city. Mr. Iswaran, the Singapore Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education talked highly of the commercial impact Formula 1 has had on the city since 2008. And it was encouraging to see how the Sports Council was working hard to embed motor-sport into society with year long activities from grass roots racing and children’s events through to ‘Sliding’, a popular sport in Asia. Emotional and fiscal growth are real and positive.

However, one of the most wonderful moments for me was the power that is; Mr Ecclestone. He arrived to talk about the specifics of Formula One and the global partnerships that are building alongside an ever growing race calendar. When asked what was it about LG that worked so well with F1, what is this partnership based on? Mr E replied ‘I needed a new washing machine, they make good washing machines’. I find it amazing that however many powerpoint presentations, videos and brand matrixes we utilise to explain how a partnership in F1 can help a brand, Mr E summed it up quite lucidly. It is simply powerful enough to make a consumer in need of a washing machine now think of LG. They may not have known about the brand before but now they do, and they trust it due to the values of Formula 1. The master of one liners did it again.

I will not tell you what he said about why UBS are now a great partner! But what a man…
