The next big thing?

9th May 2011

The 24th and 25th of April saw the beginning of the new ATS Formel-3 Cup which is the German Formula 3 Championship for single seater cars, which is seen as a strong launch pad for drivers to make their mark in the world of motorsport and help them work their way towards top racing championships such as Formula 1.

ATS Formel-3 has launched careers for a number of legendary F1 drivers including Michael and Ralph Schumacher, Jarno Trulli, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Nick Heidfeld.

Interstate, and myself inparticular, were keen to take notice of the new season starting as we had the privilege of designing the livery for Tom Blomqvist, a 17 year old driver who is already giving people plenty of reason to talk about him.

At the age of 16, Tom became the youngest ever driver to win the Formula Renault UK Championship, a full two years younger than Lewis Hamilton.

Its no surprise that the Blomqvist name may sound familiar, as Tom is the son of legendary rally driver Stig Blomqvist.

For me, this was a great opportunity as this was the first racing livery I had worked on. I found it a challenge to begin with as it was unfamiliar territory and there were many rules, regulations, techniques and approaches to livery design that I was not aware of which I had to quickly learn. Certain aspects which may seem small at first, like sponsorship placement, do have a huge impact on the design of the livery.

I tackled this project head on and really got stuck into a new realm of graphic design to me, and now the season has gotten underway I feel really proud to see my first livery design speeding around the race circuits.

Tom had a good first race at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Germany, which took place on the 24th and 25th of April, and this weekend saw Tom have another strong race, this time at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.

You can keep track of Tom’s progress here.
